Fall River fly fishing - Deschutes N.F., Oregon
Before heading to Sunriver on Friday morning to spend Memorial Day weekend with our family, we stopped to fly fish nearby Fall River. It is a relatively short cold spring fed river that flows into the Deschutes River. There are rainbow, brown, and brook trout that call Fall River home. Fishing is restricted to artificial barbless flies.
Our Mini Adventurer was intrigued by my G Loomis fly rod, so I showed him how to hold it. He was a natural. In a few years I am sure he'll be out fishing me.
Julian and Katie watched as I tried to entice fish to my flies. Unfortunately the trout were not rising, so I switched from my normal two fly setup to a large wet fly. First cast, and I landed a small rainbow trout.
I landed a few more trout, but nothing of any size. It was slow and I didn't see nearly as many fish as I used to in the river. On the bright side no one was around.
On Sunday I came back to fish Fall River again with my parents. Katie stayed back in Sunriver while Julian was napping.
The fish were still not rising, so I alternated between a couple different wet flies. I landed several nice trout including a 16 inch rainbow that I kept.
I love Central Oregon and Fall River is one of my favorite places for a quick fly fishing trip. I look forward to my next visit.
